Why You Need a Jtek Number
A dedicated Jtek number is the foundation of your entire communication setup. It keeps your personal number private while giving you a professional, trackable line for every lead.
- Keep your personal and business communication completely separate — Your personal cell number stays private. Leads, clients, and prospects will only ever see your Jtek number, so you never have to worry about after-hours texts going to your personal phone or mixing conversations.
- Every reply comes back into your Jtek inbox — When a lead texts or calls your Jtek number, Jtek routes it directly into your inbox, alongside every other conversation. Nothing falls through the cracks in a separate app or SMS thread.
- Outbound calls and texts go out from a single number — Whether you're texting a new lead or calling to follow up, everything goes out from your Jtek number. Your contacts always see a consistent caller ID.
- Automated messages look like they're from you — When Jtek sends automated follow-ups on your behalf, they come from your dedicated number — not a random shortcode or 800 number. This dramatically increases open and response rates.
- Call recording and transcription — Every inbound and outbound call on your Jtek number is recorded and transcribed automatically, giving you a searchable record of every conversation.
Choosing Your Area Code
Your area code signals to leads that you're local. Pick one that matches the market you serve — leads are far more likely to answer a call from a number they recognize.
- Go to Settings > Phone Numbers — In the left sidebar, click the gear icon to open Settings, then select "Phone Numbers" from the submenu on the left.
- Click "Add Number" — A modal will appear with a field labeled "Preferred Area Code." This is where you'll enter your target market's area code.
- Enter a local area code for your market — Type in the 3-digit area code for the city or region where most of your leads are located. For example, 512 for Austin TX, 305 for Miami FL, or 310 for Los Angeles CA.
- Review the available numbers list — Jtek will search its number inventory and display available local phone numbers with that area code. You'll typically see 10–20 options to choose from.
- Not seeing numbers for your area code? — Some area codes have limited availability. Try an adjacent area code for the same metro area. For example, Austin TX also uses 737 — either will appear local to your leads.
Claiming Your Number
Once Jtek shows you available numbers for your area code, picking one takes seconds. Your number is active immediately — no waiting period, no porting required.
- Review the list of available numbers — After clicking Search in the area code modal, you'll see a list of phone numbers available for that area code. Each one shows the full 10-digit number and its city/region label.
- Select the number you want — Click any number in the list to select it. It will highlight with a blue border. There's no meaningful difference between available numbers — just pick one you like the look of.
- Click "Confirm" — A confirmation screen will show you the number you selected and the monthly cost (included in your Jtek plan). Click Confirm to claim it.
- Your number is instantly active — No waiting. The moment you confirm, your Jtek number is live. It appears in your Phone Numbers settings page with a green "Active" badge.
- Your number is now the default outbound line — All SMS messages and calls you initiate from Jtek will go out from this number automatically. You can add additional numbers later if you need separate lines for different markets or team members.
Recording Your Voicemail Greeting
Your voicemail greeting is often the first impression a lead gets of your business. Set up a clear, professional greeting right away so no inbound call goes unanswered.
- Go to Settings > Phone Numbers — Click your active phone number to open its settings panel. Scroll down until you see the Voicemail section.
- Click "Record Greeting" — A browser-based recorder will open. Allow microphone access when prompted. You'll see a red Record button and a timer.
- Record your greeting in one take — Speak clearly and slowly. A good greeting says: your name, your business, that you'll call back shortly, and optionally asks them to leave their name and best callback number. Keep it under 20 seconds.
- Or upload an MP3 instead — If you prefer to record in a studio app like GarageBand or Voice Memos and export as an MP3, click "Upload File" and select your audio file. Jtek accepts MP3 and WAV formats.
- Preview and save — Click Play to preview your recording. If it sounds good, click Save. Your voicemail greeting is immediately active on your Jtek number.
Testing Your Number
Before you start sending your Jtek number out to leads, do a quick test to confirm everything is working end-to-end. This takes less than two minutes and gives you full confidence.
- Open Conversations in the left sidebar — Click the Conversations icon. This is your unified inbox where all inbound and outbound messages live.
- Start a new conversation to your personal cell — Click the compose icon (pencil) in the top right of Conversations. Search for your personal phone number or enter it manually. Select SMS as the channel.
- Send a test message — Type something simple like "Test from Jtek" and hit Send. Within a few seconds, you should receive this SMS on your personal phone. The sender will show as your Jtek number.
- Reply from your personal phone — Text back from your personal cell to your Jtek number. Switch back to Jtek — the reply should appear in the same conversation thread in your inbox within a few seconds.
- Test an inbound call — From your personal phone, call your Jtek number. Jtek will ring your forwarding number (if configured) or show the inbound call in your activity feed. Let it go to voicemail to confirm your greeting plays correctly.
